SITES

The Red House is one of Grand Coteau's landmarks. This typical Acadian cottage has no hallwayjust two front doors leading into the house. The steps or stairway on the front porch leads up to the garonniere, the second floor where the boys slept. This gave them freedom to come and go at night without disturbing the family. Also as a living space was limited, having the stairs on the outside of the house, meant more room inside. Some structural members are hand-hewn and some are straight-sawn, suggesting that the house may have been built with salvaged materials. There is evidence that it may in fact be half a house. It was not uncommon to settle an estate in those days by dividing the house as well as land.

St. Charles College was founded as a Jesuit boarding school in 1837, St. Charles College functions today s a Jesuit seminary and spirituality center. The massive brick structure which dominates central Grand Coteau was built in 1909 to replace the original building which had been burned. The manicured grounds are extensive and include the dairy barn, another Grand Coteau Landmark. A fire in 1909 destroyed the original college building. The present one was constructed entirely of masonry to prevent a recurrence of that tragedy.

Today it is a source of spiritual influence throughout the area. As in the days past, the big house continues to wield it's influence on the area. The immediate college grounds are crossed by shady contemplative walks and oak alleys which visitors are welcome to enjoy.

Academy of the Sacred Heart
Established in 1821, the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau, is the second oldest institution of learning west of the Mississippi. The formal gardens and magnificent oak alley provide a gracious setting for one of the South's finest independent schools. Founded under the direction of Saint Philippine Duchesne, the Academy has remained in continuous operation through fire, epidemics, and war. Today it is possible to visit the museum, the Shrine of Saint John Berchmans where a miracle occurred, and some of the other older sections of the historic building not presently in use by the school. Hours: Mon & Tues 9 am-2 pm; by appointment only.
